Silicon Detectors
Through the photovoltaic effect, detectors provide a means of transforming light energy to an electrical current. The root of the theory behind this phenomenon is a small energy gap between the valence and conduction bands of the detector. When light, with enough energy to excite an electron from the valence to the conduction band, is incident upon the detector, the resulting accumulation of charge leads to a flow of current in an external circuit. Since light is not the only source of energy th...show more -

On-line FT-NIR Analysis
MATRIX-F
The advantages of real time, on-line FT-NIR analysis have been well established. However, conventional spectrometers can only be installed close to the process that they are monitoring, which makes the analyzer be exposed to a hostile environment, like drastic temperature changes and exposure to dust and dirt. Furthermore, the instrument needs to be positioned in hard-to-access and often Ex-protected area.

Avalanche Photodiodes
These avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are silicon photodiodes with an internal gain mechanism. As with a conventional photodiode, absorption of incident photons creates electron-hole pairs. A high reverse bias voltage creates a strong internal electric field, which accelerates the electrons through the silicon crystal lattice and produces secondary electrons by impact ionization. The resulting electron avalanche can produce gain factors up to several hundred.
